Prompt: Christmas tree.
"What are you doing?" Kadaj asked blankly, staring at the idiot in his doorway like he was from outer space. He might as well be sometimes, for all the sense he made. Zack smiled at him around the tree in his arms, shifting it around uncomfortably.
"I brought you a Christmas tree." He announced, as though it was a normal occurrence to show up, unannounced, with a tree at someone's apartment at three in the morning. Kadaj's gaze sharpened, blank stare transforming into baleful glare. What the hell was that supposed to mean?
"Why?" The silver haired officer asked, resisting the urge to slam the door in his face. If he did that, Zack would simply waltz a few doors down and get Cloud out of bed to reason with him, or, worse, Sephiroth to break the door down. Either one of them would do it, and succeed, because Cloud was always the voice of reason, even when it was regarding an idiot, and Sephiroth liked seeing him suffer. Getting them up at this hour, however, meant that revenge would come later on.
Zack beamed at him. "Because it's Christmas, duh." Kadaj wondered if anyone had ever pointed out to him that not everyone celebrated Christmas. He certainly did not, it was an annoyance, with all the flashing lights, screaming, greedy children everywhere, throngs of people whenever you went to a store to pick up a few things. He would admit, however, that the break was a welcome one, and sometimes his 'fans' actually managed to find something useful to send to him.
They stood there for several minutes, Kadaj trying to figure out what he could say to make this idiot leave him alone –nothing had worked yet-, Zack waiting for him to let him in so he could set things up. Surely he would just set up the tree, then leave. They did have work in a few hours, and Sephiroth had already stated that he was going to hunt down anyone who didn't show up, but, it came down to the fact that Kadaj did not want a tree in his apartment. Especially this tree, since it seemed to be shedding needles like Reno's cat did fur, there was a trail through the hallway where Zack had carried it, and like hell, Kadaj was going to clean it up.
"Are you going to let me in?" Zack asked after another couple of minutes passed, shifting again and considering whether or not to get backup. It was like a sin in his mind to let someone he love celebrate Christmas without a tree, and, as far as he knew, Kadaj had never gotten a tree once in all the years he had known him.
"I'm still thinking." Kadaj responded, face settling into a frown. He would have liked to think about it a bit more, but his keen senses picked up the jingling of someone's doorknob and he came to the conclusion that it was just easier to let him in than allow him to wake up the entire floor with his nonsense. Without saying a word, he moved to the side, making room for both tree and soldier.
As soon as he did, Zack let out a whoop that was sure to wake up the entire floor, then dashed into his living room before he could change his mind, pine needles falling like dandruff off of Hojo's head. With a shudder, Kadaj closed the door and hoped for the best. This 'Christmas' thing couldn't be that bad, could it?
He had no idea.
