Prompt: Lantern

"Why do you do that every night?" Darc asked, watching Kharg carefully hang the lit lantern in the window, its flickering light the only source of illumination in the room, if not the house. Darc was willing to bet –as long as Kharg did not know- that it could probably be seen outside town. His brother glanced at him as he made a few last minute adjustments before settling back down in his chair.

"Mother used to do it." Kharg stated in a tone that was somewhere between uncomfortable and 'I don't want to talk about it'. Darc, as always, ignored that tone in favor of trying to figure out the strangeness that was his brother. If Kharg did not want to talk about it, it had to be something good. Well, barring that 'time of the month' thing in relation to females, it usually was good.

"Why?" He asked without hesitation, leaning forward in his chair to catch every word that fell from the lighter twin's mouth. Kharg regarded him with a look one would give a particularly annoying bug, before returning to his book, a frown on his face. He did not want to answer, did not want to think about it. Mother had repeatedly told him the story behind the lantern, a soft smile present on her face as she recalled fond memories. A smile he had never seen directed at himself even once in his life, no matter how hard he tried to please her.

However, he thought with a sigh, Darc did deserve to know that Mother was always thinking of him and Father. It would be dishonorable to withhold such information out of such a petty emotion as jealousy. Even when it was not certain either had survived, all of Mother's attention was focused on them, leaving him to the care of the family servants when she wasn't criticizing him for not being like his father, or doing that to him because he looked too much like him.

"She told me once that she did it in hope to guide the lost souls home where they belonged." Kharg stated, unwilling to state anymore. He felt, rather than saw, his brother blink, heard the gears in his head turning. As much as he'd like to pretend that Darc was in the dark –pun not intended- about his relationship with their mother, he had seen the aftereffects of the encounter with the Meshimgen, though Kharg had done his best to hide the scars and his tears. He was smarter than he let on; he would put things together eventually, though Kharg would have to kill himself out of shame if he ever found out the whole truth. It was just something that was not done, but it had been alright then, because Mother was Queen, and her word was law.

"Why do you keep doing it then?" Darc asked curiously, peering at him with those eyes. Kharg couldn't look at them sometimes because they were so like Mother's that it sent a chill down his spine and made the scars on his chest ache in remembrance. Some days he could almost feel her nails tracing across his skin.

"Because it makes me remember". He answered, casually flipping the page though he was falling apart inside. He was never good enough, the lantern reminded him of that, calling home the lost members of the family, the better members of the family. No matter what he did, he could never succeed, lighting the lantern reminded him of that and also brought with it hope...

Maybe someday, she would see that lantern and return. Even if logic dictated otherwise.
